Success? What's that?

We often talk about success and spend our lives chasing it. At times I wonder what people really infer from the word 'success' and whether it could have a common meaning for everyone.

Dictionaries typically describe success as "the achievement of an aim". Literally, this definition is precise and flawless. However, in a philosophical context, this definition seems incomplete and leaves  a few questions unanswered.

Is there a common 'aim' for everyone?

Evidently, every person has his own ambitions and aspirations. For some, their primary objective could be excellence in education, for some it could be monetary accomplishments, for others it could be harmony in relationships, some may strive for fame, while for some mere survival is an achievement.

Therefore, we can safely conclude that different individuals have different aims.

Does that mean that there can be no standardized definition for success?

As a matter of fact, there is one thing that connects the varying objectives. Behind the numerous different aspirations lies one common factor : satisfaction.

Now that we know that everyone does have 'satisfaction' as a common motive, we can come up with a definition for success that fits everyone uniformly irrespective of their ambitions:

When you have achieved something that gives you satisfaction, you have achieved success*.

*My definition is based on my own perception and may be severely flawed. But, I think it was worth a try.
