Happy Valentine's Day
My birthday (on December 29th) had come and gone. I still awaited my birthday gift from Khushi. I had asked her for our long-due bike ride as a birthday gift. But, she kept postponing and making excuses. The calenders turned, and December turned to February.
While talking on the phone, I reminded her of the pending gift. "Next Saturday", she promised. "It is the last time I asked you. If you postpone it now, I'm never asking again", I warned her. She assured me that she'd keep her promise. At that moment, she failed to notice that 'next Saturday' happened to be Valentine's Day!
A couple of days later, she did realise that she had promised to go out with me on Valentine's Day. She tried hard to postpone and reschedule. But I did not budge. It had to be 'next Saturday' or never!
Waiting for 'next Saturday' seemed like waiting for eternity. I counted down the endless-seeming days. When the day finally came, I dressed the best I could, polished my bike and drove to her college to pick her up. As a Valentine's gift, I had bought her a snow globe with a dancing couple inside (like the one in her favourite song, "Main agar kahoon").
When she finally came out, I handed her the gift (which she accepted after a lot of argument and reluctance), and wished her a happy Valentine's day. "This is so embarrassing! What will people think if they see me roaming around with you like this? Didn't you have a car with tinted glasses?", she complianed as she got onto the bike behind me. I was too happy to be bothered. From the amount of time, effort and discomfort it took her to get on to the bike, I could tell she had NEVER been on a bike before.
We drove around in the locality for a while. All the tantrums I had thrown to get the bike seemed worth it. We stopped at a gol-gappa vender for her favourite snack. I suggested we have lunch together and took her to a small restaurant nearby. She spent 15 minutes outside that restaurant worrying and fussing about what people would think if they saw her with me. I tried hard to convince her that It was ok, but had to give up and return from the doors of the eatery.
We drove around a little more before she panicked about getting late. I decided not to push my luck and took the road back. As I dropped her a few alleys before her house, I felt content. Although she had spent the entire day worrying and complaining, I could not really blame her. For me, getting to see her and spending precious time with her were enough.
She got down from the bike and thanked me for the ride. I thanked her back for spending some time with me. After a brief good bye, she turned around to leave. She had barely taken a few steps away from me before I called out, "Khushi!". She turned around.
I took a deep breath and said, "I really love you a lot!"
